The world of Pokemon

Gender and life decisions

I like to pretend Pokemon is somewhat of a communist utopia. So combining that to the question Professors made at the beggining of each game up to gen 6: "are you a boy or a girl?"; I like to imagine that in the Pokemon universe, kids are free to go ungendered until they become trainers.

So with that, most parents will let their kids play out with their pronouns, clothes, as well as a name while they are still very young. And when they become 10, the regional professor will oficialize their choices in their trainer card!

Of course, some kids don't care much about it in that age and will only come out as trans way later and there are parents who don't agree with that and will force their children to perform their assigned gender. But I still like the concept that once you become a trainer in the pokemon world you get to do all sort of big important choices. Like your lifetime partner and your gender and name.

You could also argue that's why some parents are so adamant about their kids becoming trainers or why some kids are older than 10 when they first become trainers.

Language

Since there are trainers traveling all over, coming from everywhere, there is a common language used worldwide in order to make the communication between trainers easier (kinda like what Esperanto was supposed to be).

Children are taught this language in elementary school along with their regional main language.

Ash is very well versed in this language, but still has a hard time remembering or knowing the meaning of certain words. Japanese is his regional language and he knows a bit of english and maori as well.

Dawn has a very complex vocabulary even at 10 years old because of her love for Oak's poems and haikus. She knows a lot of complicated words from the "overworld language" and plenty of advanced kanji. She knows very little english.

Pokemon Biology

Pokemon that evolve naturally (by level in game mechanics) but for some reason or another decide not to evolve end up developing traits from their evolutions later in life.

Like Ash's Bulbasaur that grows thrice as big as a normal Bulbasaur; and Dawn's Piplup, whose bones become denser, like metal.

Pikachu and Pokemon that evolve with other methods rarely develop such traits.
